Peace and quiet usually. Getting back to nature and the thrill of the chase

I fly fish because I love to fly fish. It is that simple.
Sure it takes me to some wonderfull places, but I could just spin fish in the same places if I wanted to. The asthetics are part of it but really it just boils down to I fly fish because I love to fly fish.

I enjoy the places it takes you to an the desire to want to fish new waters. The taste of a cold beer after a big day walking a river.

I fish because I enjoy the time out from a busy life, the time with my friend Joe, the challenge and I love the N.Z landscape.

Crouching low on the shore of one of Tasmania’s crystal clear Western Lakes I polaroid a gorgeous brown of around 3lb. The trout cruises without a care in the world as he approaches my dun. I can read his mind “will I or won’t I?”, then like slow motion the mouth opens and your fly is sucked down!……..This is why I Fly Fish!

That moment when a dark shape comes up from the bottom of the pool and gently takes your dry fly. That is what fly fishing is about.

I fish therefore I am.
Seriously I fish with good mates and I enjoy nothing more than that split second when the rod loads on the lift and you know that 40 minutes of stalking has paid dividends

I enjoy the peacefulness at the river using a fly when the goings tuff on the spinners.
Also like the look of the big streamers.

It’s far more involved than any other kind of fishing. Fly selection, reading the fish and conditions – it’s more of an experience, casting alone is an art form which can always be improved. It’s also an awesome way to experience what we are so lucky to have in New Zealand.

For me it is the ultimate summary to wing shooting and hunting to get the materials, then tying the flies to catch a fish. All in amazing environments and all providing great memories. It is the feeling oh having a living, breathing creature on the end of the line that actually has a fighting chance against me and my gear, and the satisfaction that the fish has chosen my small fly out of the many living creatures in the water.

I fish because it keeps me sane.

For the closeness to nature you feel in a flyfishing environment. It is a very intimate way of fishing.
